According to Merriam Webster Dictionary (2017), Literacy is the ability to read and write that relates about a specific topic. It refers to the quality or state of being literate. When it comes to Media and Information, the same context is applied in order to achieve polished results. But due to different events happening in current state, people tend to lose few guidelines to successfully carry out their desired outcome. In terms of personal and professional areas, there are things you may have to consider to be a Media and Information Literate.

Let us face the fact that as we look at the setting of media in this recent society, we cannot easily see through the information presented to us since those details are not filtered. From the evolution of mankind to the subsequent evolution of media, there is a higher probability of inevitable change and those changes occur mostly on social network. People nowadays have easy access to social networking sites and most population of the people depend on the information given by this kind of medium. But the truth is, not all people know the unpleasant fact that lies beneath the face of these provided information.

Do the sources tend to justify the information stated or are they made to deceive you? The first kind of user is what we called Fake Information Spreader or Fake Spreader. It is definitely self-explanatory just by looking at the term of what this kind of user is being called, you can easily understand the gist of the actions taken and practiced by this sort of people.


One of the characteristics of a fake spreader is that who gives and posts fake news and fake information at any given time and date just to mislead people and make them believe on the information they supply. Although they present a variety of data and almost uncountable files of information, they are still included and must be added in the blacklist. One type of a fake spreader is those who advertise online. Numerous online shoppers get easily attracted of what they see in the internet. This particular kind of user often post fake products and services and will make people believe their product is actually effective and original resulting for them to be encouraged to buy.

Another kind of user is the Fake Information Believer or Fake Believer. As I have said previously, most people tend to believe on the information given to them and if effectively persuaded, the transaction ends there and the connection is closed. But the ending is very unfortunate. Tricked and scammed. Loss the money. No refunds. And unending rights of protest. Because of the lack of awareness these people have, unbearable results are at the end of the line, waiting. Perhaps, they need to acquire more knowledge about how to discern information.

One last kind of user that all people should possess is the Fake Information Doubter or Fake Doubter. This last kind of user is what we all should practice and acquire. This kind of people manifest the right guidelines in discerning information. They are critical thinkers and a media and information literate. They look at information from within and they do not base on how it appears at the first glance.

As a result, we give you few tips and steps on how to be a Media and Information Literate.

To be a Media and Information Literate you must follow these guidelines:

1. IDENTIFY. If you were given tons of reference and you are asked to sort them one by one and distinguish facts from fake, first you must have to identify the legality and validity of the information by digging out the sources from where it came from. Go for the information that is plausible enough to give credit.

2. FIND and SEARCH. Once you are finished identifying, find the information you are being skeptic about and search for more information in relation to the information who have at hand and look for reliable sources that can authenticate that information. Best example that we have is the Library.

3. EVALUATE. After authenticating, using your own judgement carefully determine the value and condition of the information given to avoid mistakes.

4. APPLY. Since you have identified, founded and searched, and evaluated the information, it is time to apply it to your research and provided improvements based on how you interpret the information.

5. ACKNOWLEDGE. Later, before finalizing your work, do not forget to consider and give credits to the sources you have used to give thanks and praise to the respective person who made the information. It all depends if you used and made your own information, which is quite greater.

Lastly, to be a Media and Information Literate whether at personal or at professional level, you must be critical in reading or viewing skills and media production and by doing that you have to develop your analytical skills in finding and producing media messages. You must learn to search facts before you conclude things because it gives you a more prevalent aspect of higher education which in fact can help you practice your knowledge in media and information literacy to prepare you for your task in life whether via personal or professional field.

Media and Information Literacy can raise awareness to the vital role of creating our own opinions and formulate new information, however, people tend to acknowledge plenty ideas about how the world works (e.g. lifestyles, behaviors, social norms, etc.) which can somehow help in providing better result but we cannot ensure the liability and effectiveness of the information. Hypothetically speaking, usual people's way of thinking in what they see today and how they interpret and evaluate information thinking that every ounce of it is accurate and valuable, which is not.
